THE EVOLUTION OF THE CONFEDERACY

My grandmother raised me.

She was born in 1890
Her father and uncles fought for the south in the Civil War
You could say she was first generation after the War
My mother would be second generation
And I guess that would make me the third generation post-Civil War.

I was raised in the Mississippi Delta
‘Colored” water fountains
‘Colored’ waiting rooms at the bus station
We did not celebrate July 4th for that was when Vicksburg fell
We did celebrate Confederate’s day
Children dressed in Confederate uniforms
And marched in a parade in Vicksburg.

As abhorrent as they are, the feelings of pride in the Confederacy
And even the racial prejudice of those closest generations to the War
Is understandable when viewed as a time frame
When Confederate soldiers were still alive in some southern communities.

But now it has been seven generations
It’s time to take the fucking statues down
Time to admit the sin the Confederacy was built on
A time to recognize that it is no longer about pride of culture and family
But an excuse for bare and bold face racism: white supremacy.

My great-great grandfather Kelly: as a teenager fought in the Civil War for the South.

My Great-great grandfather Gilliland: fought in the Civil War for the North, died at the Battle of Shiloh.

ANOTHER ALT-RIGHT GROUP

Some few thoughts to ponder before you attend church.

RE-POST BUT PERTINENT

It is understandable if a person wants to identify themself by their belief in a religion, a church, a political party, an ethnicity…; but it absolutely makes no sense that you would feel the need to identify yourself by what you do not believe.

I do not believe in vampires, werewolves, zombies, big foot, fairies, alien autopsies, ghost or things that go bump in the night.

I do not believe that the world is flat or that the sun rotes around the earth.

I do not believe that dinosaurs and humans existed at the same time

I do not believe that a snake whispered to a woman who ate an apple which brought sin into the world.

I do not believe that a six-hundred-year-old man and his hundred-year-old sons built a boat and sailed on a flood that mixed the world’s salt water and fresh water, carrying two of every animal on earth, and that upon landing a kangaroo hopped twelve thousand miles across three continents to go home to Australia.

I do not believe that a child was born to a virgin.

I do not believe in devils and demons and angles and gods, or in a physical heaven or hell.

I do not believe a man god walked on water, or that a brutal human sacrifice was performed to ‘take away the sins of the world.’

The name Atheist is a religious term that supposes the legitimizing of religious beliefs and proposes to delegitimize anyone that doesn’t accept the fairy tale.

If you feel the need to attach a name to me to identify what I don’t believe, you might just call me sane – I can live with that.

I LOVE MY NEW SLOW COOKER

I do most of the cooking at our house.   My wife usually makes breakfast and often sandwiches for lunch; but her actual cooking expertise is meatloaf (which is a favorite) and pineapple upside down cake for my birthday.

But supper cooking is mine.  I like to cook.

We have used slow cookers for years – always the inexpensive models like those sold at Walmart.   I have always noticed that it didn’t matter whether you selected low or high heat the slow cookers always boil everything, which means the temperature was at least 212 degrees; but the food turned out good.

Our old cooker was on the last leg and I was questioning how safe it was to leave if we were away from home.   A replacement was definitely overdue, and my wife suggested I go ahead and buy a more expensive top name cooker.

Of course, I hit You Tube – now my standard for research.

The new Cuisinart I bought is fantastic: it can sauté, steam and slow cook.  I can sauté my trinity (onions, celery and garlic) right in the cooker, then  switch to slow cook and add my other ingredience.    The Cuisinart keeps the low temperature below boiling.   I can even brown my meat or steam rice and vegetables right in the slow cooker.

TOMATOES, TOMATOES, TOMATOES

For those of you that are not familiar with northwestern Maine, our growing season is short.   We can have frost as late as the first week in June and as early as mid-September.

That being the case, it is mid-August now and we are just getting our first decent tomatoes and sweet corn.

I do love tomatoes: good tomatoes, not those tasteless, hot house red things they try to pass off as tomatoes in the supermarkets.

I will be gorging on tomatoes over the next four to six weeks.

ATHEISM IS A RELIGIOUS TERM

I do not believe that statues bleed.

I do not believe in devils and demons and angles and gods, or in a physical heaven or hell.

BELLICOSE TRUMP

News commentators are constantly proclaiming that Trump is erratic, but he has surrounded himself with excellent advisors by having selected military generals for critical positions.

The problem with Trump and his bellicose statements is that he is surrounded by military generals.

If you ask a any career Marine brass how to deal with an international problem, his first answer will always be ‘send in the Marines.’

Military men are trained to see military solutions and to be forceful and bellicose in the face of enemies.

Trump is a todie hanging out with the big guys and trying to sound like one of them.   He needs to be surrounded by diplomats, not generals.

We are in a dangerous position when we have military Generals advising the President on North Korea diplomacy.

A DAY OF INFAMY

August 11, 1945 - One week after dropping a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima, Japan and killing 140,000 men, women and children, the United States dropped a second nuclear bomb on Nagasaki killing an additional 70,000 human beings.

The attack on the twin towers pales in comparison.

FIRE AND FURY

LIKE THE WORLD HAS NEVER KNOWN!

There have been five major extinctions charted through the geological record.   That the sixth extinction awaits somewhere in the future is not a question but fact.   Whether that event results from an asteroid impacting the earth or the moon; or the sun boiling away our atmosphere leaving the earth like its sister planet Mars; or a cataclysmic volcanic event…    The question is not if, but when and how.

There is a new scenario to add to the mix.    3.2 million years ago, a creature came down from the trees and found it could grasp a stick in its tactile hands and beat the brains out of other animals and creatures like itself.

The 1.6% genetic difference between human and its closest relative in the great ape family allowed development of a creature that has been able to bring most animal groups to the verge of extinction, destroy the rain forest, pollute the rivers and lakes and oceans of the world and contaminate the very air that sustains life on earth.

The earth was able to adjust to man’s destruction for 3 million years.   Then in the early 1900’s, only 100 years ago, the population of man exceeded one billion: thirty years later two billion, thirty years later four billion… five billion, six billion, seven billion; and by 2050 the world human population is charted to reach nine billion.    The ability of the earth to support the consumption of food, water and natural resources required by this human virus is finite.

Only seventy years ago, in the 1940’s man traded the stick in his hand for a nuclear bomb.  Now instantaneous mass destruction brought on by human error or madness is possible.

For sixty years the sanest among the race have held the reigns on nuclear destruction while building a nuclear arsenal capable of destroying the entire earth seven times over.

The fear has always been that at some point in the future this power would fall into the hands of a person or persons unstable enough to pull the trigger: fire and fury like the world has never seen.

Seventy-two years later, on the anniversary of the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we have two psychotic narcissists being goaded by their minions to unleash Shiva the destroyer of worlds – not understanding that the world they will destroy is their own.

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE

DAMN THAT HURTS!

This morning I smashed my toes into the base of my Total Gym and they hurt like hell.

I missed my chance of being an entrepreneur millionaire.

Back in the early 1960 I was on a flight crew that flew into Greece.    Many of the flight crew members bought worry beads to hang on their flight jackets.

When we returned home to Maine it was hunting season and while out hunting I came across a pile of moose poop.   Realizing they were about the same size as worry beads I scooped up a pocket full, later dipped them in acrylic and made a set of moose turd worry beads for my flight jacket.  I also made a set of moose turd earrings for a young woman I knew (I have always had class.)

Ten years later, I happened to be in L.L. Beans and found they were selling moose pearl swizzle sticks and other moose turd items.  Now they are sold everywhere.

I had missed my chance at fame and fortune.

Now I have another brilliant idea for a product; but being in my seventies and having not kept up with electronic innovations I will offer the idea for free to any young entrepreneur that is looking to make their first million.

Background:
My wife and I live in a small cabin.   I am a good size man: six feet, topping two-hundred pounds and wear size 14 shoes ( I have big feet.)    As we have carpeting my wife doesn’t like me coming into the house wearing my boots or street shoes, so I usually walk around in my sock feet.   This means that I inevitably end up smashing my poor toes into furniture, steps, walls or the hearth of the wood stove.

So here is my suggestion:
Make a pair of socks with the toe made of light sensitive material.

A small chip can be added that can make the light sensitive sock perform like the motion light at your front door.

When the toe of the sock moves within 500 centimeters toward an obstruction the chip can activate a toe airbag the same way the airbags work in our cars.

As I am not able to develop this remarkable million-dollar opportunity I encourage some young entrepreneur to patent this idea and run with it.

However, if you would have me as a loyal customer – you had best hurry.

You’re welcome

WIND

I am obsessed with the wind
Of all natures children
Of all natures gods
It is the wind that awes me most

I can view the sunrise and sunset
And feel the sun's warmth on my skin,
I can appreciate the eerie light of a full moon
reflected on a snowbound world,
I can see and hear the tumbling water of a stream
And experience the pleasant serenity of a lake.

But it is the wind

I can welcome the soft touch of a snowflake
as it kisses my face,
And shiver as the rain soaks my clothes
and chills my frame,
I can hear thunder
and startle at the streak of lightning ripping the sky.

But it is the wind that speaks to me.

I have bask at the fire that brings contentment
and warmth to my home,
And choked as my lungs fill with smoke
as the forest burned away,
I have driven on the ice
on the Kuskokwim River.

But it is the wind

I have seen the northern light
blaze in the twenty-four-hour night,
I have felt the penetrating chill
of the cold at fifty below,
But it is the wind
the wind I remember most.

Huddled in my bed in a tiny log cabin
In the darkness of the never ending Arctic night
While the wind outside, unrelenting, warned me
‘You do not belong here.  This is my world.  I rule here.  Hear me and quake.’

It is the wind
The relentless wind that keeps me awake tonight.
